Elderly, physically challenged and students to get 25 percent discount on rail travel in Bangladesh: Railway Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam,
Road Transport and Bridges, Shipping and Railway Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam said that three types of passengers will get 25 percent discount on metro rail and long-distance rail. They are - elderly people, disabled people and students or learners. However, they will have to show appropriate identity cards.
He told reporters after a meeting with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at the Secretariat today. The Railway Minister said that since Eid is only a few days away, we are trying before Eid. The chances of this being possible are a little low, but it will definitely be confirmed before the next Eid of Sacrifice and tickets will be available at a 25 percent discount. Train tickets are available online, in response to a question about how to get discounted tickets online, the minister said that there will be an option online. The minister said that if you show your identity card, then if you are above 65 years of age, you will get a 25 percent discount. You will have to show your student identity card and in the case of the disabled, they also have a card. If they do that, then they will get the benefit of that discount. The previous government did about 1 lakh crore rupees for the railways, but in reality, it could not show any development of the railways except on paper. We can see that the railway engines are less, the trains do not run, they stop. In response to a question from reporters whether the Prime Minister has actually said anything about these issues, the Railway Minister said, the simple thing is that we want overall development of the railways. The trains that are running now and how to travel in a short time, to increase the speed, the implementation of some existing projects will get more momentum. He said, some new projects are being taken up. As a result, the current situation of the railways that you see - the services and facilities here will be stronger, more people-friendly. The Railway Minister said, we are trying to ensure quality travel of passengers during the upcoming Eid. If we can do that, then I think it will be possible to manage the train schedule. He said, we will also be able to carry the additional passengers who come during Eid. So, I think, there will be no possibility of any schedule disruption. He said that the government has taken adequate initiatives to ensure the Eid journey in general, considering the traffic congestion on the roads, pressure on the roads and the pressure on the launches. The minister said that we have been working on this issue for the last 10 days. All the ministries are involved here and those who will work on the field, then the mobile team, naval police, highway police and the army will also work. The minister said that so that temporary shops are not built on the roads, market ghats and lanes can be used, so that there is no encroachment. Since the markets are set up temporarily, they will not be there during Eid. The minister said that there is no possibility of anyone charging more for vehicles. There is a bus owner association, a launch owner association, we have sat with them on this issue. They have promised and we have kept them under surveillance and we will establish it at any cost.
